USE BARCODING TO CONTROL INVENTORY
Snowbird Systems incorporates barcoding software and hardware with inventory and warehouse control to create an efficient inventory tracking and shipping system. Snowbird Systems uses our custom software applications in conjunction with both Metrologic and Intermec hardware to produce an easy to operate and completely reliable solution. Above is the Orbit Omnidirectional Presentation Laser Bar Code Scanner by Metrologic which we use in our point of sale (POS) and UPS approved shipping modules. Snowbird Systems has integrated many of the Intermec products showing on the above right into its solutions or into in house applications of our customers. Warehouse personnel are trained in the use of portable RF terminals that communicate with the WCS computer. Through the RF terminals the operator tells the WCS where items are stored. This allows the WCS to direct the most efficient travel path in picking orders. Other functions performed with the RF terminals include moving inventory between locations and counting inventory by location. Each location and product are assigned bar codes, that are scanned when performing any function of the WCS. Storage systems within the warehouse include shelves for small parts, racks for larger components, and open bay for large equipment. Pictured, is a location label applied to tape, which outlines storage lanes in the open bay area. The Product Movement Ledger has developed into the cornerstone of the WCS. Each time any product is picked, stored, counted, or moved an entry is automatically made in the ledger. The user id and time, down to the second, are also recorded on the transaction detail that the RF unit transmits. This allows the warehouse manager to immediately isolate any problems and question the person in charge of that operation. The intense operations of a warehouse would unnecessarily burden the mainframe computer servicing the rest of the company. A separate computer is networked, so that warehouse operations are handled in a timely manner, while real-time updates to the mainframe continue. A nightly run is performed automatically by the network, which compares similar data held on the separate systems. Any discrepancies always point to errors made by operators on either system. The warehouse manager works closely with the data processing manager to identify and solve these procedural errors.
